Making plans for Fort Dodge: Class 5A edition

The Johnston Dragons are headed back to state for the second-straight year. This is the first-time in school history this has happened.

The defending champion, the runner-up and the team that dealt the top-ranked squad their last defeat all are headed to Fort Dodge to play in the 2014 Iowa High School Girls State Softball Tournament.

Iowa Public Television will broadcast the final Friday night, July 25th at 7p. You can also watch the game online at Paul Yeager and Laura Leonard will have the call.

Here is a look at the regional finals and the teams that will play on next week.

Top-ranked Johnston defeats Sioux City East, 12-0. Last year’s 5A runner-up is making its 5th trip to Rogers Park.

#2 Dowling Catholic 8, Ankeny Centennial 1. Maroons will be back in Fort Dodge to defend their 5A state title.

#3 West Des Moines Valley stops Council Bluffs AL in five innings, 12-2.

#4 Southeast Polk 12, Cedar Rapids Kennedy 0. Rams off to State for first time since ’08.

#5 Muscatine 11, Ottumwa 0. Muskies will be in Fort Dodge for the 14th time and first state tournament since 2010.

#6 The Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawks make their 21st state tourney trip with a regional final 1-0 over Dubuque Senior. Apparently, no one wanted to leave the field after the game, according to Jeff Linder of the CR Gazette.

#8 Pleasant Valley 6, Davenport West 0. Spartans advance to 5A state tournament next week.

#9 Waukee 6-1 win over Ankeny. For the first time in 6 years, the Warriors are off to state.
