Game: #5 Waukee Warriors (0-0) at #7 Valley Tigers (0-0), Valley Stadium, West Des Moines Kickoff 7:30

Last meeting: 45-21 Valley win on 8.24.12 at Waukee.

Waukee – Head Coach Scott Carlson

Waukee wants to be known as the team with a lot of sets, uptempo, but can slow it down. Look for some pro formations. 2 back looks, hang hat on running the ball. Power run team. Will single back it to pick up the tempo. Ability to throw downfield will set the tone for the offense. That was missing last year and that helps the balance of the offense.

Carlson says this some of the best depth Waukee’s ever had. Now the roster is over 80 players. Highest program numbers in school history. Allen brothers of AJ and Trevor. #30 Trevor is the junior who played a lot as a sophomore. AJ #21 will see some time on offense, but mostly at DL. AJ actually led the team in yards per carry while Trevor had more total yards.

Team of Triplets – Priest brothers of  #13 Gavin, #19 Kevin and #52 Mitch. All are very different according to Carlson

Platoon Plus: Finally starting to get some platoons and not just 2-way players. May see a lot of players as the heat may have some impact.

Heat Week: Hot weather this week prompted the team to have Tue/Wed practice under the lights. Partially to get used to them and the other it was cooler.

Sophs the QB1: QB starter will be the sophomore #8 Ben Ferkin. Lots of upside to him. Not the starter from last season. That was Hoeg. He’ll back up, but play some defense. Still developing. Ferkin was the soph team QB last year, but this will be a big test under the lights and in front of a big crowd.

Powerball: Would like to hang hat on being able to run the ball. That being said, offense has lots of variety in the scheme. Look for a few sets, up tempo look, pro formation with 2 backs, single formation.  #38 Tyler Speight is the starter at FB. Halfback is #30 Trevor Allen, the leading returning rusher in 4A. 1265 yards last season as a SOPH.

Loaded on the Line: O Line – Good numbers back. 3 starters return to the line plus the TE #87 Michael Jacobson. That position is important in the offense. Quality players up front. They are hungry, but those new to the line will have to learn on the go. Returning players: T #74 Ross Reynolds, G #67 Will Pigg

Defining the Defense: Look for a 4-3 look, but at times, #21 AJ Allen will drop back to give a 3-4 look. AJ will walk up/back depending on situation. Front 7 are impressive in coach’s words. But that is in practice, now it is time to see under the lights how they will respond. Big and strong up front, high motor guys, Ends #92 Anthony Nelson and #21 AJ Allen are finesse guys.

Young Warriors at LB: Linebackers are younger guys. #16 Pat Gray is a junior, MLB #33 Kyle Boulanger and #42 Drew Linemann is a sophomore. So, very young and inexperienced at that position. Boulanger is a returning player.

Secure Secondary: More experience. #7 Matt Corbett is the QB of the Defense. #35 Connor Cox is a senior, hockey player so you know he’s not afraid of contact. Hoeg the back up QB, but will likely play a lot of CB with Cox. Look for battle between  #32 Conner Wachter and #15 Reid Loftsgard.
