Media Reports: UNI to hire Doug Schwab as wrestling coach

KWWL-TV in Waterloo is reporting Monday night that Doug Schwab will be the University of Northern Iowa’s next wrestling coach. He’ll replace Brad Penrith.

From KWWL.com:

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — Sources have confirmed to KWWL that former Iowa national champion Doug Schwab will be named the next head wrestling coach at UNI. A press conference has been scheduled for noon on Thursday to make the formal introduction.

Schwab, a former Olympian, has been an assistant for the Hawkeyes the past 4 seasons. During that time, Iowa won 3 national and 3 Big Ten championships.

As a collegiate competitor, Schwab was a 3 time All-American from 1998-2001. The Osage native won a national title at 141 pounds in 1999.

Schwab will replace Brad Penrith, who was dismissed as the Panthers’ head man in early April.

Schwab has been on Iowa Public Television as many times as I have. Through his various appearances on our College Wrestling programs, he’s also been featured in our Olympic Iowans series produced by Judy Blank.

Here’s the link to our Iowa Journal story on the Olympic hopeful, wrestler Doug Schwab, then an assistant coach at the University of Iowa. He’s originally from Osage.

That show also featured Shawn Johnson. I think you’ve heard of her. She’s the olympic gold medal winning gymnast, Dancing with the Stars champion and now training to compete in the olympics and represent West Des Moines.

And also Lolo Jones was featured on this Iowa Journal. The track star is making another run at the olympics from her humble beginnings.

The discussion for this program brought in former Olympians Dan Gable and Natasha Kaiser-Brown and Dan Gable to give commentary.
