We’re talking music education on this week’s show. I know this is a passionate topic for many, so please tell your friends about what we’re doing this week. I know many of my Iowa music friends are getting ready for state large group competition, so getting that 29 minutes of TV time may be tight.

On the Thursday, April 29 edition of The Iowa Journal
(Johnston, Iowa) –Thursday’s episode of The Iowa Journal will look at how budget cuts are affecting music programs in Iowa schools. This program airs Thursday, May 6 at 8 p.m. It will be rebroadcast Friday, May 7 at 6:30 p.m. on statewide Iowa Public Television and Saturday, May 8 at 8:30 a.m. on IPTV WORLD. It will also be available online at iptv.org/iowajournal.
The Iowa Journal visited music classes in an elementary school in Council Bluffs and a master class for vocalists at Iowa State University with international opera singer Simon Estes. In addition to teaching at ISU and Wartburg College in Iowa, Estes has begun a “Roots and Wings” tour in a statewide effort to raise funds to promote talented young Iowa performers.
In the studio to discuss the cost and value of music education are: Iowa Department of Education Interim Director Kevin Fangman, Iowa Alliance for Arts Education Executive Director Diane Franken, and music educator and advocate Esther D’Agrosa.
