Way of the Cross – Eastern Iowa

Good Friday will bring several communities a few cross-walkers. Mason City used to do one, Bettendorf is doing one as well. I got this note from one of my polka friends, Tim Westemeyer. This is about a way of the cross in St. Donatus in eastern Iowa. Here’s Tim’s note.

Don’t know if you know this or not. In a little town south of Dubuque, Iowa is a small Luxemburg town called St. Donatus, Iowa. It was settled in the early 1800’s by immigrants from Luxembourg . Each year they have a reenactment of the station of the cross. behind the church is a very long and step hill. The earlier settlers climbed this hill and placed stone monuments representing each station of the cross. They are placed on a trail that leads approx a mile up the hill.

There are a few Yeager’s buried around the St. Donatus area and that is where many of our family roots are in Iowa.

Any other way of the cross’ we should know about?
