If Iowa lawmakers have to make monumental decisions this legislative session, we all will be doing some reflecting.
We may say, I remember when we had 99 counties.
A couple of moths ago, the Cedar Rapids Gazette’s Adam Belz wrote an article about another idea to consolidate Iowa’s counties.
I did get quite a response from people after posting the story. We talked about it again in a story meeting here at the Iowa Journal. But, former Des Moines Register Columnist David Yepsen would write the idea once a year, or so I was told.
Well, Adam has posted another article, this time on what to do about naming those counties. It is more of a fun look at renaming the new merged counties. There’s some fun versions to view.
Eric Soloman says we should name some of them after the Palin children.
Steve Carns suggests the names after my children and his own name.
And Steve Woodhouse suggests Johnson county remains, just named now after Shawn and Zach.
Plus Steve Young wants to be heard with a common reference he makes now, merging Polk and Jasper into JasPolk.
I don’t think my suggestion of one merger becoming the Kutcher Kounty Kougers. I think the sale would be tough. Especially the PR spinning that would be needed for the team. Steve Buttry wrote that a county should be named after Harold Hill. I added that the salesman from “The Music Man” would have a tough time selling that.
–update— Check the comments for Steve Buttry’s other comments, also clarifying what he said. Steve says he suggested Harold Hill as a name of a county. If you go by who claims the Music Man, then Cerro Gordo County will get a new name.
Actually, Paul I suggested Harold Hill as a name for a county, along with some other famous Iowans: Ray Kinsella and Sioux City Sue. – Steve Buttry
