Just because they may be thin, doesn’t mean the hats aren’t mighty

20120120-215509.jpg

Nikki Newbrough, KWWL - TV Waterloo.

Thank goodness winter is here. We needed the snow to help bring out the hats.

We had one crop already this season. This would be the second round of lids.

We begin with Wartburg grad and now KWWL reporter Nikki Newbrough. She is the morning reporter for the NBC affiliate. Translation: She can be silly when needed.

Nikki's live shot on earth.

Earlier in the day, Nikki was at the University of Northern Iowa campus asking students about the cold and snow. Her interview almost stole the show. He was in a NASA-type space suit.

Earth to UNI dude, nice hat.

You can see in this picture, Nikki put the space helmet on her head for this still frame.

20120120-215459.jpg

Brian Boesen, KWQC - HD, live on Brady Street Hill in Davenport.

Brian Boesen is reporting on Brady Street Hill in Davenport. I’ve done that shot a few times in my career.

The KWQC reporter and I met backstage at the Girl Scouts Night on Broadway a couple of months back.

I also met the clubhouse leader for hats in 2012, Megan Ottier that night in Bettendorf. More on her in a moment.

Back to Brian… I did ask him if he was related to the Des Moines Boesen’s. Specifically, former Dowling Catholic TE Ben Boesen who is now playing football at Iowa State. No relation between the two. Yes, I was that guy who asked.

20120120-215519.jpg

Angie Hunt, KCCI - TV Des Moines.

Back to Central Iowa and an ‘ole favorite for hats here at PP&M and that would be Angie Hunt.

The Ames bureau reporter has been captured with many great lids on her head the last few years. She gets the plum assignments in all corners of the viewing area, many northern points, so wearing a good head topper is vital to her good health.

Thank you to Angie.

20120120-215528.jpg

Krystle Kacner , WHO - HD Des Moines

Newly hired reporter Krystle Kacner of WHO-HD is now getting into the hat game. She’s new to the area and to the station.

But her hat is one of veteran caliber.

As she settles in, we’ll get her to tweet a couple of pictures of herself wearing a hat.

Chris Earl, KCRG Cedar Rapids

And back to eastern Iowa and KCRG reporter/anchor Chris Earl.

Mr. Earl deserves special attention for this furry wonder on his head.

Would you call that Cousin Eddy’s hat from Christmas Vacation? Or is that more Daniel Boone?

Now back to the hat that I received the most in my inbox.

Morgan Ottier of KWQC opens the competition with a home run.

Megan’s hat is spectacular. But some question if the hat is for show or if she’s serious about wearing the hat. Better yet, is she serious while wearing that hat?

I know many reporters were looking forward to getting out in the elements this weekend to talk about the ice and snow, but it looks like those pictures will have to wait, as the next winter death storm is staying to the west.

So Lauren Squires, bring us your hats from the Omaha market.

If you know of a hat to share, send the pic to IPTVPaul@gmail.com .

Darboh returns, same result: Maroons win 43-3 against Ames

BILL NEIBERGALL/THE REGISTER After scoring Dowling Catholic's first touchdown on a pass reception against Ames, #15 Amara Darboh, right, celebrated with #67 T. J . Palme, left, and #76 Mark Kenkel, center, in Class 4A first round playoff football game played at East High School Williams Stadium on Wednesday night Oct. 26, 2011.

West Des Moines Dowling Catholic started slow but finished fast against Ames in an opening round win in the 2011 Iowa High School football playoffs. The Maroons improved to 8-2 with a 43-3 victory to Ames’ season at 4-6.

Amarah Darboh returned to action to grab his longest TD of the season with a 45 yard catch and set the pace for the night. He grabbed 4 during game worth 81 yards. If not a huge stat line, it was a morale boost to a team that went 3-1 since his departure at Southeast Polk on September 23rd.  The Michigan, Florida, Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Iowa recruit will be a vital part of the Maroons march to defend their 4A football title.

Since that SE Polk game, the Maroons have built depth at receiver with Matthew Haack and Brandon Ogden. The pair was used heavily in Coach Tom Wilson‘s game plan with Ogden catch 5 passes and scoring a 14-yard TD just before halftime. Haack was used more in the running game, carrying it 4 times and 25 yards. The Maroons would finish with 267 yards rushing and 190 yards passing.

Dowling Catholic also developed a double QB/TB combination with the emergence of freshman Ryan Boyle and Chase Dowell. Boyle would run the option style attack with Dan Hartlieb used more in the passing offense. Boyle provided a spark in the regular-season finale at Indianola and did so again against Ames. His 7 carries were worth 87 yards. A couple of those jaunts set up touchdowns and the freshman did put the last points on the scoreboard of the game on a 1 yard plunge.

BILL NEIBERGALL/THE REGISTER Dowling Catholic's #11 Jon Wisnieski, right, looked up in thanks as touchdown was signaled after a minute delay, after his 70 yard interception return against Ames. A flag had been thrown on the play, but was against Ames.

Dowell put his head down and popped a few Little Cyclones during the contest. He finished with 10 carries for 75 yards and a blocked punt.

Ben Goaley started, played and continued to carry the load, but he’ll likely be used as needed to keep him as healthy as long as possible. He finished with 9 carries and 56 yards.

Jon Wisnieski played primarily on offense, but he made the most of his defensive opportunities when he stepped in front of a Alex Brammer pass and ran it back 70 yards for a score. Wiz would grab a score in the north endzone on a pass only he could catch for a 22-yard score on a drive that went 98 yards on 6 plays.

BILL NEIBERGALL/THE REGISTER Dowling Catholic quarterback #3 Dan Hartlieb dropped back to pass against Ames.

Dan Hartlieb would get a TD following 2 great runs by Boyle in the no-huddle offense. That drive changed the tempo of the game and the firmly put the momentum in Dowling’s corner.

Michael Gillotti picked of a pass in the next drive to add to his season of accomplishments at cornerback. That defense held a beat up Ames team to 38 yards rushing on 22 carries and 102 yards passing on 35 attempts and 10 completions.

The Maroons advance to Monday’s game at Des Moines Lincoln. The Rails advanced with a 52-14 victory against DM East.

Our KWKY broadcast begins at 6p with kickoff slated for 7p on 1150 AM or KWKY.com.

YBHA VI Starts With A Delay

Amy Noah Levi April 11

Momma and her boys before departure.

The Yeager boys are left alone again.
What could possibly go wrong this time? Another knot the size of Italy? A trip to the surgeon? All of Europe being shut down for Royal Wedding?

Each of these work trips has been an adventure. Some, more than others.

We learned from the last delayed return trip from Holland.

What started out as an excuse for a family photo has turned into a superstition buster. We didn’t take a picture with Amy, Noah and Levi in April and she had some extra time on the company dime.

This departure was a little different as it came during the week and not on a Saturday. So, we took the group picture the night before her adventure. I guess I should have gotten both boys up this morning as Amy’s flights were delayed and rerouted for a six-hour stretch on Tuesday. She originally was headed to Detroit with final destination of Amsterdam. Now she’s flying through Minneapolis.

So, her boss and the other traveler in their group used the Des Moines International Airport as their remote office to plow through some email this afternoon.

The storms finally cleared and her flight landed in MSP then took off for Holland.

Our first day was pretty good. Noah had Kindermusik tonight. He’s of the age where he gets about 30 minutes with Miss Tina and the last 15 minutes with families. So Levi and I hung out in the hall waiting for our time to come in and see what Noah had done. Levi is pretty good during family time as he thinks it is pretty cool to be in the same room as the big kids.

When we got home, it was bath time and bed. Both boys were tired and went to bed pretty easy. I think they are still tired form Noah’s birthday gatherings. Let’s hope they sleep well and be good for Dad. Otherwise, they may not get their surprise later in the week.

Join us next time when we talk about the songs we listen to here in the U.S.A.

Hats, they’re not just for breakfast anymore

Lee Rouse in front of the WHO-TV 13 live truck.

I’ve asked. You’ve responded. Here’s another installment of Paul Yeager’s Hat Parade.

I like to see pictures of TV reporters wearing hats while doing live shots. I used to not wear a hat and just freeze off my ears. That’s why I’ve got small ears. They’re like that cat we had growing up, she wouldn’t come in from the cold and had her ears freeze off.

We begin with the photographers. They are behind the scenes. Occasionally, you may see their hand in a live shot. This is my old friend Lee Rouse of WHO-TV in Des Moines. Lee was behind the camera the day back in 2007 when he and Jon Cahill were out in a snow storm and the power line just erupted behind the subject of the interview. Anyone remember this video?

Katie Wiedeman, KCRG -TV 9, Cedar Rapids

This screen shot captures Katie Wiedeman of KCRG-TV 9 news of Cedar Rapids. She is usually based out of the Dubuque newsroom, so it is always a fun time be out and about in those hills of eastern Iowa.

This shot is more of a head band and a side, profile shot of Katie.

But it is a lid and it is on her head in a live shot on television.

It is a nice purple headband. Hey, whatever it takes to stay warm and toasty when out in the snow.

Ted McInerney, WHBF - TV 4, Rock Island.

Now we head back to my old stomping grounds and the Quad Cities.

WHBF-TV (Channel 4) gave us a couple of good shots before and they haven’t disappointed me this year either.

This is Ted McInerney of the CBS affiliate based in Rock Island.

The big snow of early February, hit the QC particularly hard, with more than a foot of snow falling in the region, some spots even seeing 17 inches of snow.

WHBF SUV stuck in the snow.

This was the type of snow where the reporters say, ‘don’t come out here unless you have to…” and they meant it. Maybe one of Ted’s co-workers should have listened the advice being given.

It snowed enough to make driving difficult for everyone.

Including reporters for WHBF. Channel 4 did a story on how the reporter got stuck, received help in getting shoveled out and moved on to the next snow desk story.

Courtney Baker, WHBF - TV 4

Again, with the WHBF reporters.

This is Courtney Baker.

She is also live outside the station’s front door, in the snow. Her hat is a nice checkered one and adds a little variety to the mix of our normal lids we see.

Concetta Callahan, WHBF - TV4

Here is another WHBF reporter, Conchetta Callahan. She too, is out the front door.

You can see how much snow is behind here (I feel like writing copy for reporters again).

The road behind her is the street that leads to the District of Rock Island, a popular weekend and night hang out for some of the younger adults.

I’m just saying, I may have been there a time or two. Blue Cat was a fun place to go…. but I digress. I think even saw my first Nada’s concert at RIBCO on a Halloween way back when.

Back to the hats.

Angie Mitchum, WQAD - TV8

We stay in the Quad Cities market and the Illinois side of the river. This is Angie Mitchum of WQAD-TV.

Channel 8 is becoming a place for former KWQC folks with Terry Swails now doing weather there. When Erik Maitland returns to the QC, he’ll be in direct competition with this former weather office mate, Mr. Swails.

Erik has been in Minneapolis since leaving Davenport a couple of years back. Mr. Maitland will be replacing Ryan Burchett in front of the chief meteorologist’s green screen.

Back to Angie, she’s in the simple black hat and wearing a scarf. I could do a post on scarves, but come on, would you really read that?

Christina Palladino, WOI - TV5.

Back to Des Moines and WOI-TV.

This is Channel 5′s weekend anchor Christina Palladino out on assignment. I believe she is at the Brenton Skating Plaza in Des Moines. It always a good spot for a night live shot. You wouldn’t need a good back light to see her red hat on television.

Christina is another QC transplant to Des Moines. She formerly worked at WHBF in Rock Island. She is not the first and probably won’t be the last to be transferred from one to the other.

Andy Fales, WHO - TV13

And we finish this post with Mr. Andy Fales.

This is a rare find. Normally, Andy will not wear a hat, but this Tuesday storm forced everyone to bundle up more than usual.
It is time for me to get ready for Andy on SoundOff with Keith Murphy.

There was another big storm in north Iowa and I expect to see some pictures soon of reporters out in the elements and wearing their protection.

Links to Iowa Candidates 2010

Earlier I told you about the forums we were hosting here at IPTV to hear what candidates from all parties have to say about why they should be elected on November 2nd, 2010.

We’ve recorded the programs a few days ago aired them the week of October 17.

The first program featured candidates from the 1st, 3rd and 4th congressional districts.
The link to the program is here.

This program featured Rob Petsche, libertarian, Manchester, Jason Faulkner, independent, both in the 1st district. Rebecca Williamson, Des Moines, socialist workers party, 3rd district. And Dan Lensing, Fort Atkinson, independent candidate 4th.

Also on the ballot in Iowa’s 1st is incumbent Bruce Braley of Waterloo. The republican in that race is Ben Lange of Independence. Here’s the link to their Iowa Press appearance.

The 3rd is represented by democrat Leonard Boswell of Des Moines. He and republican Brad Zaun of Urbandale were on Iowa Press for their exchange. View the program by clicking here. The two just had a good exchange on KCCI Monday night.

Incumbent Tom Latham of Ames and democrat Bill Maske of Truro were on this program. Latham is the current congressman for the Iowa 4th.

Our second Iowa Candidates 2010 program featured those seeking office in the Iowa 2nd and Iowa 5th.

Jon Tack (Constitution Party – Hiawatha), 2nd Congressional District; Gary Sicard (Libertarian – Robins), 2nd Congressional District; and Martin James Monroe (Independent – Sioux City) were on the program you can watch here.

Rep. Dave Loebsack is the current congressional representative for the Iowa 2nd. Mariannette Miller-Meeks is the republican candidate from Ottumwa running in the race. The Iowa Press program is here.

Rep. Steve King did not appear on the Iowa Press program, but the democratic challenger Matt Campbell did. That link is here to see the man from Manning sit at the Iowa Press table.

We then moved on to the race for governor. The first program featured Eric Cooper (Libertarian – Ames), Gregory James Hughes (Independent – Cedar Rapids), and David Rosenfeld (Socialist Workers Party – Des Moines). View that one here. Later in the week, Gov. Chet Culver and Terry Brandstad took the IPTV stage. Several clips are here. The entire debate is here.

The next program featured the races for Auditor of Iowa and Treasurer of Iowa.
Jon Murphy (Democrat – Des Moines) and David A. Vaudt (Republican – West Des Moines). The show link is here.

Michael Fitzgerald (Democrat – Waukee) and David D. Jamison (Republican – Ames) were on the show as well. Again, click here to watch.

Then we talk about the AG and AG races. Make sense? Francis Thicke (Democrat – Fairfield) is trying to unseat Secretary of Agriculture
Bill Northey (Republican – Spirit Lake). Also on the program was Attorney General Tom Miller (Democrat – Des Moines) and Brenna Findley (Republican – Dexter). View the entire program here.

The Ag race is gaining some national attention when author Michael Pollan said the Iowa Agriculture race is one of the most important in the country.

Our final Iowa Candidates 2010 program was about the Secretary of State race. Matt Schultz (Republican – Council Bluffs), current SoS Michael Mauro (Democrat – Des Moines) and Jake Porter (Libertarian – Des Moines) were on the stage. That program is viewable by clicking here.

Again, these were not called debates, but a chance to discuss the policy and politics of the races and hear from the candidates. That is our public service to you.

We recently recorded a WHO Radio debate in the United States Senate race between Senator Charles Grassley (R-New Hartford) and Roxanne Conlin (D-Des Moines). We recorded the work of Gary Barrett in the studios of WHO and had unmanned Iowa Public Television cameras capturing the action. Watch their hour-long exchange here.

The Drive to the Dome begins with the Bobcats

To reach an end goal, you have to take the first step.

That step, is in front of the Dowling Catholic Maroons on Wednesday night for the first round of the 2010 Iowa High School Athletic Association’s football playoffs. This marks the 33rd time in school history the Maroons are playing a 10th game.

First, they must exercise a foe from the past, the Marshalltown Bobcats. Last year, the 2009 Bobcats were writing school history and shocked the Maroons in the UNI-Dome in the semi-final game, 28-25.

Chanse Creekmur vs. Dowling in 2009 at the UNI-Dome. T-R photo by Ross Thede.

But this is a different time, season and team. No revenge factors, but gone is Chanse Creekmur. He already had thrown for 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns coming into the semi-final game. This season, the Bobcats have yet to reach 3,000 total yards as a team and have only scored 23 touchdowns. Coming into the playoffs last year, the Bobcats were 9-0, this season, they haven’t won a game since September 3rd against Johnston.

The Bobcats have lost 6 straight. All but 1 of those losses were against play-off bound teams. That win over Johnston helped get them in the post-season, despite a 21-0 loss to Mason City last Friday night. Their wins came against Roosevelt and Des Moines North. The losses were to Valley, SC East, Waukee, Ames, Fort Dodge and Mason City.

Injuries have been one big reason for the only 4A school in Marshall County. Several spots have players with limited experience. But two of the sophomores in the starting line up, MLB Tyler Kluver and DT Pedro Gomez have started all 9 games this season.

Haven’t won since September 3rd against Johnston but that win helped get them in the playoffs. How they got in is explained in this Marshalltown Times Republican article.

Earlier this week, Marshalltown coach Dave Holdiman told the MTR that since his team got a second life, they’ve taken advantage in practice.

“We’ve come back with some resolve and have had really good practices,” said Marshalltown head coach Dave Holdiman. “Everything has been up-tempo and upbeat. It’s been an enthusiastic effort on the kids’ part, I think we’re on the rebound psychologically.”

The rest of the article is here.

Both the Maroons and Bobcats played Johnston (both teams beat the Dragons), Valley and Fort Dodge. DCHS won both while MHS lost both.

Marshalltown

Lee Navin / For the Register (ph Marshalltown junior quarterback Austin Hauser (#11) hands off to junior running back Kyle Carnahan (#4) as the Marshalltown Bobcats (3-2) play the Waukee Warriors (2-3) during the CIML Iowa Conference Class 4-A high school Homecoming football game at Waukee Stadium in Waukee. Waukee won 31 to 14.

Austin Hauser is slated to start at QB. He’s thrown for 966 yards on 181 attempts and 89 completions. But don’t be surprised to see Blake Gimbel get some snaps. Top targets include Mark Duncan, Bryer Mason, Alex Thompson and Ty Steffensen. Many of these players have big-play potential and Maroon fans know how this team can make big plays.

Darius Zeigler is the featured running back. His 89 carries is good for 454 yards.

The Bobcats are averaging 19 points a game while giving up 25.6.

The Maroons haven’t played since October 15th when the beat Indianola 30-6. Several guys were able to take advantage of the bye week to heal and get ready for this stretch run in the playoffs. One starting change will be Nick Navin for Andrew Pick at running back.

We go on the air at 6p on AM 1150 KWKY in Des Moines or online at http://www.KWKY.com as we can stream this game and all games before the semi-finals. Then we’ll be not allowed to have a broadcast stream of the game on the internet. Romelle will be busy giving Twitter updates at Twitter.com/KWKYSports for those of you out-of-town or wanting updates.

20 years in the making

When you grow up in a small town, one of the biggest deals in town after cruising, is athletics.

That was certainly true in Jesup when I was growing up there in the 80s and 90s.

Sports were a chance of escape or adventure. No one went to the pros, but to Des Moines for the state tournaments. We never sent teams, but would go to see others play and dream that maybe someday we’d play at Veteran’s Auditorium.

Everyone went to the basketball games, especially when both boys and girls teams were good, football games, even when they didn’t win a game for years and later softball games.

Program page from the Iowa High School Athletic Union. (image from Jaye Donlea Miller)

During the summer of 1990, I was getting ready to enter high school. I wasn’t good enough to be a pinch runner for the varsity baseball team, but knew many of the guys on the team and our field was in the same complex as the softball team. So, we got to know some of the girls as well. Who am I kidding, of course we knew WHO the girls were, they didn’t know who WE were.

The summer of 1990, something special was brewing on the softball side of the complex. The girls were playing great ball and were winning a lot of games. In fact, they won 39 of them and only lost four before making the state tournament for the time in school history.

This year, the Jesup High School Softball team is going back to state for the first time since 1992. But just two years before in 1990, it wasn’t a return trip, but an inaugural venture to Fort Dodge.

Team picture following welcome home ceremony. (image from Jesup Citizen Herald/Jaye Donley Miller)

Its been 20 years since the girls in orange and blue almost did the unthinkable and dominate large school en route to a state title. Back then, all classes were in one big tournament. Jesup beat Ottumwa, before losing to eventual state champion West Des Moines Valley in the semi-finals. Jesup beat Mason City Newman (who had my future co-worker Amy Fleming on that team as an 8th grader) in the consolation game.

Rod Elson was the head coach, who also was the wrestling coach. Workouts for the girls looked like something out of the wrestling room. They were intense, as was he.

That 1990 team was fast. They stole a lot of bases and had overall speed. Many of the girls also ran track, even making it to state track in several events.

Jody Bolton was a senior playing center. Jaye Donlea played short and batted second most nights. Sophomore Amy Kies was the big power bat. She played first. Nan Schlee split pitching and second base duties with her twin sister Babs. Carrie Zuck played OF and also DH’d, she was just a freshman that year. Seniors Amber Kresser caught, with Tracie Bickert in left and Suzie Zuck in right. Another freshman starter was Kellie Bevans at 3rd.

Also on the team were: Shannon Foster (who would pitch a perfect game at state in 1992), Missy Beyer, Jill Fox, Amy Cagley, Heather Westphal, Mary Anton, Amanda Kopplin and Nikki Jacoby.

Many members of that 1990 squad would go on to play in college. One of those players was Jaye (Donlea) Miller.

“It was an awesome experience, not just for us players, but also for the parents, community, etc.,” Donlea, now Miller said. ” It made it even more exciting beating those larger schools, showing everyone that we could play with the “big dogs”. Coach Elson had a big role in starting a softball phenom in Jesup with our class. He worked us hard, but it surely paid off!”

Miller went on to play at NIACC in Mason City. Then she would play at UNI in Cedar Falls. She now has a daughter that will get to see Jesup on the stage this week against Mount Vernon in the 2010 State Softball Tournament.

“My daughter is at the age now where she is really getting into softball, so it’s nice to share this experience with her. Taking her to these state games will show her how exciting it is to play at this level,” Jaye added.

I remember taking a pep bus from Jesup to Ft. Dodge. It was a long trip, but fun to be part of that experience. Many other people drove. It was a “last one out turn out the lights” kind of thing that week.

That fact didn’t go unnoticed for players like Miller. “The most exciting part about playing at the state softball tournament was seeing all our fans cheering us on. I think the whole town was there. I believe Jesup had the most spectators of any school attending!”

“I remember making the trip with grandma and grandpa in the old van. Think we went every game!” said Amy Wood Rahe. The town was all abuzz over that team. Some were even displayed school colors, like Clint Fuller. He, and many others, painted their chests blue or orange to match the school colors.

“Nothing pulls Jesup together like a trip to the state tournament, other than the beer tent at Farmers Day!” said Fuller this week on my Facebook wall.

“This was an awesome experience you’ll never forget and hopefully these girls can come away with the same type of experience and someday share with their kids,” added Miller.

None of the girls on this year’s Jesup squad were alive in 1990. But that doesn’t mean they don’t know about the best finish ever by a Jesup softball team at state. This year’s team could be the cardiac kids as they’ve won several games on the road to state in dramatic fashion. The preview article in the WCF Courier on the team is here.

Leah Durnil leads Jesup to state. (image from Jesup Citizen Herald)

This year’s squad is lead by John Begley. He’s no stranger to the state tourney taking Solon to four straight state tournaments from 2003 to 2006, winning in 2003 while finishing second in ‘05 and ‘06. That’s a pretty good mark and may give the J-Hawks a little advantage. His granddaughter, Kelsey Lough, is the team’s pitcher. Did I mention she’s an 8th grader?

Will Leah Durnil, the girl who hit 2 game-winning home runs, bring her hot bat to Harlan Rogers Park? How about Erica Soppe and second baseman MacKenzie Miller? Will they continue to bring the good gloves to the park?

Best to this year’s squad against Mt. Vernon.

The Iowa Economy: Improving?

Good news about Iowa’s economy continues to trickle in, but does this mean the economy is turning the corner or a case of we had nowhere to go but up?

Iowa’s unemployment rate is 6.8% or 114,600 Iowans out of work. The lowest rate is in Lyon County (4.8%) in far northwest Iowa. The second lowest is Carroll County at 5.1%. The highest level is in Allamakee at 11.8%.

Job openings are starting to appear in the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Is that a good sign? The fields hiring? According to the story:

The top categories for jobs were general help, followed by accounting, general administration, sales, nursing and social work.

Another story in the Des Moines Register shows the Iowa economy has seen gains for six months in a row.

What does that exactly mean?
Where is the growth happening?
Are you getting back to work yet?

We have put together another economic roundtable for May 13 on the Iowa Journal. Our feature piece will likely be about Carroll, Iowa. What have they done in Carroll County to keep that number low and be a regional economic engine? We hope to find out in our visit this week.

What other spots are improving? Where do you live and what is the economy like there? Tell your story below in the comments or send us an email to IowaJournal@IPTV.org.

First wine, now beer on TIJ? What’s next, Jack Daniels?

The Iowa Journal hits on another popular topic this week by looking at the beer industry in Iowa.

Even before we aired our discussion on the wine industry in Iowa, the question from a staff member was, “what about beer?”

Great question, Mr. Torpy. Here’s your answer.

This Thursday at 8P The Iowa Journal will look at what the beer industry means to the state for sales, marketing and distribution. No, there won’t be any samples, but there was fun in the production of this story by producer Judy Blank.

Tim Hynds of the Sioux City Journal maintains a blog called Sioux Brew. Here’s the post on our upcoming show. Thanks to him for the publicity. He’ll be a guest on the program on Thursday. You can see it Thursday night in HD and Friday at 630p in High Definition as well.

Here’s his post if the link doesn’t work.

Iowa’s beer industry will be subject of IPTV program; yours truly slated as panelist
By Tim Hynds | April 26, 2010 – 11:42 am

Iowa’s beer industry will up for discussion this week on The Iowa Journal, a weekly current events program on Iowa Public Television.

I have been selected as a panelist on the program and will appear with David Coy, president of the Iowa Brewers Guild and brewer at Des Moines’ Raccoon River Brewing Co., and Doug Alberhasky, the manager and “bier guy” at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

The network has done extensive taping at Ames’ Olde Main Brewing Co. for the program.

The panel will be moderated by Iowa Journal host Paul Yeager.

The episode is scheduled to air this Thursday, April 29th at 8 pm on IPTV stations across the state. It will be rebroadcast April 30th at 6:30 PM and at 8 AM May 1 on IPTV World. The program will be available for viewing online at iptv.org/iowajournal.

-Tim Hynds

I certainly know there’d be an interest to having a Templeton Rye program…

What should we talk about in our discussion?

What questions do you have about the Iowa beer industry?

What’s your favorite Iowa produced beer? Why?

Iowa education officials visit Van Meter

Judy Jeffrey, Director, Iowa Department of Education, Paul Yeager and John Carver, Superintendent, Van Meter Schools at The Iowa Journal show taping March 30, 2010.

John Carver finally got his wish. The Department of Education’s director came for a visit.

Carver is superintendent at Van Meter schools. He was a guest on The Iowa Journal back in March.

Carver openly invites everyone to see what he’s doing at his school. During my first visit, it was obvious from student reaction, they were used to having their superintendent give tours to people in suits. The students and teachers I met were not distracted by the me, but rather knew what was expected when called upon.

Judy Jeffrey announces her retirement. Photo from Gov. Culver's office.

Carver told me he’d long wanted the director of the Iowa Department of Education to visit his school. He even made another invitation during our show taping back in March. Finally on April 13, 2010, John Carver got Judy Jeffrey, and her interim replacement Kevin Fangman, into Van Meter schools.

This is quite the candid conversation by students to Jeffrey and Fangman. The exchange was recorded on UStream and lives here.

Judy Jeffrey is conducting the interview of a wide age-range of students at Van Meter. She’s retiring in May, but certainly has a future as an interviewer if she so chooses.

Jeffrey presses students what exactly is different at Van Meter, what are they learning, what does a perfect school like and other education topics. Some of those topics were covered in our innovation program. Here’s a post about what we’ve found during research for the program.

Twitter is also talked about in this discussion, how the students learn a lot from it, and how exactly do you sort all the good information from bad.

Kevin Fangman is listening to the discussion and starts to ask questions about 18 minutes in the video.

The video is long, but worth your time
