Forgiveness on our final Iowa Journal

We are getting ready for what will likely be the final Iowa Journal in its current weekly format. This will mark the end of season 3 of TIJ.

The show will be about forgiveness. Take that for what it means, but our show will look at the importance of forgiveness not just for our peace of mind, but also what it can do to our bodies. The show topic is something you’ll only see on public television. Here’s a earlier post about the show.

We will hear stories of forgiveness from Simon Estes involving the death of his father and how his mother told him he had to forgive the doctor. Also, Joan Becker, mother of Mark Becker will be featured on the show. Her story of forgiveness comes from those involving her son, Mark. Mrs. Becker saw our program on mental illness and said more people need to see that show to better understand the things she’s lived with for so many years.

Our studio discussion includes:

Dr. Nathaniel G. Wade, associate professor of psychology at Iowa State University who has studied the effects of forgiveness counseling since 2000;  Sandy Hoenig of Ames, a retired school counselor who has been a forgiveness workshop leader for more than 10 years and authored the book, “The Joy of Forgiveness;” and Mary Hayes Grieco, the director of The Midwest Institute of Forgiveness Training in Minneapolis. Grieco is an international forgiveness teacher and the author of books and CDs, including “The Peaceful Heart” and “Be A Light: Illumined Essays for Times Like These.”

We also will hear from Gail Sheehy as she talks about who is taking care of our parents and what can we do to make sure we are getting the best care for them.

See the Iowa Journal #331 at 8p Thursday on Iowa Public Television. The show will re-air Friday at 630p then live on http://www.IPTV.Org/IowaJournal forever and ever. Or, you can click here to see the show online.

Now, back to the background of the show.

The Iowa Journal is not going away and no one has lost their jobs. It is just our jobs are changing a bit, as is the show.

As of now, the Iowa Journal will return in the fall, but not on the weekly format you’ve come to know and love. Ok, maybe know of on occasion when The Office or Grey’s Anatomy were in reruns, or you’ve lost your remote.

Earlier this year, our regular, weekly show was part of IPTV’s answer to the state’s required 10% budget cuts.

We have life though, as a special series at IPTV. We will keep the Iowa Journal name and likely produce 5 topics over the year. How exactly they are presented to you may vary from topic to topic. But each topic may have multiple parts to it.

I could be making a lot of this up as I go, but we hope to know more by June or July. By then, I’ll be knee-deep in productions of Iowa’s Simple Pleasures and The Iowa State Fair.

Thank you to each and every one of you for reading this note, sending an email, helping set up an interview, coming to our Johnston studios and every thing in-between. We greatly appreciate it. Thank you for taking time to be a part of the first three seasons of The Iowa Journal. We hope for 3 more.

Curious about what we’ve done over those three years and what you may have missed? Here’s our complete rundown.

Media Reports: UNI to hire Doug Schwab as wrestling coach

KWWL-TV in Waterloo is reporting Monday night that Doug Schwab will be the University of Northern Iowa’s next wrestling coach. He’ll replace Brad Penrith.

From KWWL.com:

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) — Sources have confirmed to KWWL that former Iowa national champion Doug Schwab will be named the next head wrestling coach at UNI. A press conference has been scheduled for noon on Thursday to make the formal introduction.

Schwab, a former Olympian, has been an assistant for the Hawkeyes the past 4 seasons. During that time, Iowa won 3 national and 3 Big Ten championships.

As a collegiate competitor, Schwab was a 3 time All-American from 1998-2001. The Osage native won a national title at 141 pounds in 1999.

Schwab will replace Brad Penrith, who was dismissed as the Panthers’ head man in early April.

Here’s the link story done by the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier.
Schwab has been on Iowa Public Television as many times as I have. Through his various appearances on our College Wrestling programs, he’s also been featured in our Olympic Iowans series produced by Judy Blank.

Here’s the link to our Iowa Journal story on the Olympic hopeful, wrestler Doug Schwab, then an assistant coach at the University of Iowa. He’s originally from Osage.

That show also featured Shawn Johnson. I think you’ve heard of her. She’s the olympic gold medal winning gymnast, Dancing with the Stars champion and now training to compete in the olympics and represent West Des Moines.

And also Lolo Jones was featured on this Iowa Journal. The track star is making another run at the olympics from her humble beginnings.

The discussion for this program brought in former Olympians Dan Gable and Natasha Kaiser-Brown and Dan Gable to give commentary.
You can watch the entire program here.

Iowa’s Big Issues

What is in our row ahead for the Corn State? What impacts us all?

What issues cover and impact all Iowans?
What five things do we all care about, or need to care about?

We’re looking for the big 5 as a potential show idea.

Education? Even if we’re done in school, how the next generation learns is key to our future.
Ethanol? You may not live on a farm, but your fuel additive takes land fencerow to fencerow, water and food. Sounds like a big deal.

Alternative health care?
Politics?

John Carver suggests economy, lack of leadership, change, future of Iowa.

What are your ideas? Send them to IowaJournal@IPTV.org or post below.

IPTV’s look at Innovations in Education

Virtual Welding at Sigourney High School. Shot take from IPTV.org/IowaJournal for April, 1, 2010 program.

Iowa’s education system was long known for being the best in the country.

Now, not as much as test scores are dropping in some spots while other rates, like dropouts are on the rise.

Here’s a post about the show I wrote Wednesday. It has full background on tonight. Or, just the press release version can be found here.

Now to the links TIJ #323 Innovation in Education.

Judy Jeffrey, Director, Iowa Department of Education, Paul Yeager and John Carver, Superintendent, Van Meter Schools at The Iowa Journal show taping March 30, 2010.

You can view the entire show here. If you do this before 8p Thursday, you can be cooler than your friends. That includes a feature on Van Meter, Sigourney and their innovative ideas. Plus it includes discussion with Judy Jeffrey, Director of the Iowa Department of Education and John Carver, Superintendent with Van Meter schools.  Our discussion was recorded in the Iowa Journal studios at Iowa Public Television on March 30. The original show’s air date is Thursday, April 1 at 8p and Friday, April 2 at 630p.

I’ve had some great discussions with people around the show. I am compiling a comment page. If you’ve got comments about the show, send those to IowaJournal@IPTV.org and we’ll get those included. You can also include your thoughts in the comments below.

Here’s the breakout of the pieces of the show.

Just the video story on Sigourney and Van Meter is here.

The entire discussion with Jeffrey and Carver can be found by clicking here.

Sailing Around The America's with David Thoreson. Shot from IPTV.org/IowaJournal

We also got to set sail Around The America’s with West Okoboji’s David Thoreson. We ran one feature here in the TIJ program and also a web exclusive, continued discussion with David. The show’s feature is here. The on-line only piece is found here.

That’s a lot of links, but fun viewing for the whole family. Plus, clean fun, except when the pigs got loose in the studio. You’ll have to watch the entire show to see that happen.

There will be a show about the role music education plays in our education. Look for more details on the show back here at Public Paul and Media. See, I had to do one more link just for fun.

Wanted: Your Innovative Education Ideas

The Iowa Journal is working on a program about innovation in education.
What exactly does this mean?

That’s what I’m asking you.

Give me your school’s innovation in 100 words or less. Leave the response in the comments section below. Sorry, Iowa schools only.

What does innovations in education look like?

What new and different things are you doing at your school that is working in getting you to learn more, teach better, reach higher and improve yourself or your school? Is it all on technology? Does your innovation go beyond a new computer but real self-created content?

If you want to bring some life to it, make a 60 seconds or less video. You can post that to our Iowa Journal Flickr page. Your video will get cut at :60.

If you want to just talk to your webcam, great. If you want produce a video telling us what innovations you’re doing at your school, show us.

We may use some of the entries in our story about innovation and would love to show as many Iowa innovations that are out there. That feature runs March 25th on Iowa Public Television at 8p. Entry deadline is March 21 at 6p CDT.

The videos will be on our Iowa Journal Flickr Page.

We’ll also post the comments on our Iowa Journal home page on IPTV.org.

Show us your innovations and we’ll show the rest of the state on The Iowa Journal on March 25th at 8p.
