Examining Education on IPTV

We’re in the education business this week on IPTV. We are putting together a series of programs surrounding the Iowa Education Summit.

The event is happening this week in Des Moines at Hy-Vee Hall.

Iowa Public Television is recording many of the speeches and breakout sessions. We have a crew assembling them together for a series of programs. Here’s the link to the entire rundown of speakers. We will have those archived on IPTV.org for you to watch again and re-tweet with the #IAEDSummit hashtag.

I am moderating a panel that will tape on Thursday. We will be airing our work on IPTV on August 2nd. I’m curious what you think about education in Iowa. How can we improve? How do we get past talking and get to doing? Was this summit a good use of time and resources?

We will be holding a studio discussion wit six guests: Governor Terry E. Branstad (R); Representative Cindy Winckler (D), Davenport, Education Appropriations Subcommittee; Clayton M. Jones, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rockwell Collins, Inc.; Mary Wilcynski, principal Kennedy High School, Cedar Rapids; and Amy Prime, Newton Elementary School teacher; Gary Goldsmith, member Corning School Board.

• This new Iowa Public Television special features a discussion among education, business, and government leaders as they build on the lessons of the Iowa Education Summit in Des Moines.
• In addition to these programs and the network’s extensive offerings for educators, this fall Iowa Public Television will make PBS LearningMedia, an online digital library, available free to Iowa teachers for use in the classroom. This digital library is aligned to Common Core Standards and includes more than 14,000 instructional resources such as videos, interactive activities, images, audio files, mobile apps, lesson plans, and instructional activities.

We all like friends, but this much?

We are living in the Facebook frenzy. Almost every friend is on it, mom is on it, even grandmothers are friending, posting and checking status updates.

Then came businesses, bands and media outlets, all embracing the medium.

Some television stations hold contests to try to get more “likes” to their pages. They think the more that like them, the more that will watch them. There is some truth to that theory.

But some social media experts will tell you it is about the interaction with those fans and not just the pure number. That was a big topic at our Iowa Broadcast News Association’s mid-morning session. We talked about social media in newsrooms.

But, I don’t think this approach came up.

That is the group Superfly Samurai sneaking into the Channel 8 and getting the likes of Julie Sisk and Jim Mertens to jam, along with the night crew of Jason Feckner, Rae Chelle Davis, even Terry Swails gets into the mix. So do other weather types of James Zahara, Cassie Heiter and Anthony Peoples.

Is that irony when the weather radar is knocked out by a storm?

Sorry for the delay in updating the site. Amy and I actually took a vacation. You may be subject to some of our travels to Napa Valley, San Francisco and AT&T Park.

We begin with the storm that no one knew was coming.

Early Monday morning, severe weather rolled through central into east-central Iowa.

One of the first things damaged was WHO-HD’s doppler radar located on a tower in Alleman, Iowa. Chief Meteorologist Ed Wilson posted this picture on his Twitter account Monday afternoon of the remaining tower section.

Here’s another photo from the story that WHO did on the damage in Story County.

The station will use National Weather Service Radar until repairs are made. The pieces of the radar did some damage to a nearby farm, but no one was hurt by the debris. Here’s a link to the story that aired in the 5p newscast of Channel 13.

The storm continued east into Tama County doing widespread damage, especially the town of Garwin. One farm damaged was that of Wartburg Comm Arts alum Sarah Thomsen’s parents. Some may remember her at Miss Tama County, but now she’s your 4p News Anchor at WBAY-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Her mother was interviewed by Ch. 13. Sarah’s sister, Susan, was a reporter at KIMT-TV in Mason City a few years back. You can watch the story here.
