42 in the 1st (DCHS 69 CBTJ 0)

Dowling's 2nd and 3rd string played most of the night against TJ.

I’ve been to a few football games in my day, but none like Friday’s game at Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson. The Dowling Catholic Maroons rolled to an impressive 69-0 win over the Yellow Jackets.

The road trip was an adventure for Coach Tom Wilson‘s team, who took a detour to get to the stadium just 40 minutes before kickoff. But those players stepped off the bus and established things quickly.

Thomas Jefferson’s Dominic Wilson gets taken down by West Des Moines Dowling’s Matt Merfeld, left, and Max Pyle as he runs the ball during Friday night’s game at C.B. Stadium. The Maroons, rated No. 1 in Class 4-A, defeated the Yellow Jackets 69-0. (Image by Daily Nonpareil's/Cindy Christensen)

TJ got the ball first and on their first play passed it for 6 yards. That was almost the highlight of the night. The next play TJ fumbled. The Maroons took over on the TJ 25. Two plays later Dalton Parrott was in the end zone for his first of 3 touchdowns.

Two 3 and outs for CBTJ and two times Dowling Catholic’s Jacob Stacy returned the punt for a touchdown. The first one from 46, the other from 47 yards away.

Two offensive plays, 21 yards.

Then it got ugly.

Dowling put 42 points on the board in the 1st quarter to roll to a 69-0 win.

Connor Bravard scored three times, one on a run then two passes for TDs.

Dan Hartlieb, son of former Iowa quarterback Chuck got his first varsity touchdown. So did Alex Heckman, who was the game’s leading rusher with 90 yards. Alex is not the 2-deep roster and is likely the 4th or 5th back for the Maroons on game nights. He’s in the mix with guys like Parrott, Stacy, Nick Navin, Steven Licktieg, Andrew Pick, Ben Goaley who all saw action Friday night.

Dowling rolled to 445 total yards offense to TJ’s 92. BTW, it would have been 70-0, but there was a missed extra point in the game.

Dave enjoys a blizzard. Maybe Bev's cookies this week?

Noah did get to listen to the game a bit and heard my one comment about my messy boys. I was referring to Dave and Brian,  not Noah and Levi as I normally do. Thanks to Council Bluffs native Andrew Batt for the recommendation of the Pizza King for supper. We ate with the blue hairs and had a great time in CB.

Thank goodness we had a nice night because were outside in the open air, second press box. If it did start to rain, we would have been covered a bit, but not too much. It also was a bit loud under the speakers. It felt like a rock concert for a bit.

We did have some wireless microphone issues, sorry about that. We are trying to work those out ahead of Friday’s game at Des Moines East. We go on the air at 530p for the 7p kickoff. That is a different time than normal. You can also listen online at http://www.kwky.com wherever you may be in the world.

The 700 Club

700 clubWhat has become a central Iowa institution turned 700 last night.

WHO-TV’s SoundOff put on its 700th episode Sunday night. Keith Murphy was there in the beginning back in January, 1997 and still runs the show today.

Many faces around WHOTV have changed, but Keith has been the one constant on the show along with funny lines, rants, callers, home team chatter and great hair.

SoundOffThere were many laugh out loud moments during the show on Channel 13. Many of those moments come from the best of “What’s Bugging Andy“, letters and story time with Gary Dolphin and the legendary ping-pong match between Round Guy and John Bachman.

During my first stop at WHO-TV, SoundOff didn’t exist, it was still time to “Beat The Bear.”

But then-news director Al Setka wanted something different and got it a year later in 1997 when he brought Keith Murphy over from WOI-TV to replace Pat Parris. Keith had a different sounding voice then, not sure how it evolved, but there’s a different pitch to it. But over the years, there’s been a lot of mixed nuts on the show.

The show starred Keith and Round Guy, but now features Andy Fales as the sidekick, or in some eyes, the star of the show.

Chris Hassell came on board 4 years ago and provides a spark to the show in skits involving University of Iowa play-by-play man Gary Dolphin and most recently a Cornhusker fan.

I’ve known Chris awhile and he’s passionate and good at anything he puts his mind to. Even if it does got a bit over the top as was the case with the Little Lick bit. Or his Marty Terrell impersonation.

There are many links to the show here on the SoundOff website.

Sorry if you wanted to read something about Pat Robertson here. None of THOSE 700 Club mentions here. Or the new KCCI morning meteorologist Wes Callison who is replacing Bryan Karrick. And also no mentions if Jeriann Ritter is pregnant.

Noah Shave1

Noah takes a turn at the 'razor'.

When kids go unsupervised, this is what can happen.

A few days back, I was feeding Levi in the morning and Noah was instructed to go brush his teeth and comb his hair before we could go to school.

He first came back into Levi’s room with a can of shaving cream in his hand. I gave him some cream into his hand and off he went. Noah has shaved before, so I thought he knew the drill and where to put everything.

noah Shave2Apparently, he wanted to shave his forehead.

And eyebrows.

And his entire face.

The shaving cream is a soap and his razor does not have a blade, it is just a simple plastic model of the real thing. Noah and I have shaved together before, but this was his first solo time.

He may not like this shot at his high school graduation party, but I sure will.

Noah Shave3Noah is 4 in these pictures. We’ve found 4 to be a pretty fun age. He’s a good kid and just occasionally do we need to be separated for a bit.

Pretty soon he’ll be 14 and shaving for real. Then we’ll probably have to have a lot more space between us.

I’ll include a couple of extra pictures of this experience because they were too good to edit to just one.

Noah shave4

Do you think he kind of looks like actor Zack Galifianakis in any of these?

It is a good thing Noah shaved that morning.

A work in progress at Thomas Jefferson (WK1 Dowling @ CBTJ)

CBTJJust one year removed from the schools first ever playoff experience, there’s already a change at the helm.

Gone is Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson alum Steve Cozad, enter first-time head coach Mark Puev.

So far, the new coach appears to be in the middle of a work in progress as the team is 0-1 following last year’s 1-8 campaign. They will have a serious test of their progress from top-rated West Des Moines Dowling Catholic comes to town Friday night, August 27, 2010. Kickoff is at 730p with no sophomore game earlier.

This is the first time these two teams have met since Dowling posted a 44-14 win in 2007 and a 45-7 win in 2006. Dowling beat Valley last week 34-7.

CB Thomas Jefferson’s Michael Wallace looks for an open man as Abraham Lincoln’s Andrew Miller, center, and Luke Thallas pursue. (Daily Nonpareil Staff photo/Cindy Christensen)

The Yellow Jackets dropped their season opener to cross-town rival CB Abraham Lincoln 55-7. The only offense came before halftime for the Yellow Jackets when Dominic Wilson went 78-yards on a pass reception. The score was already 41-0 at that point in the first half. Otherwise, TJ had 96 yards in the first half of total offense and 2 first downs. Wilson finished the game with 3 catches and 114 yards. All of Wallace’s completions were to Wilson.

Puev is a first-time head football coach after 14 years as an assistant at Omaha’s Benson High School. He’s a former head softball coach at Benson, but spent 14 years as a football assistant following his discuss career at the University of Nebraska. He was there from 1987 to 1992 when it was the Big 8.

A couple of assistants stuck around and helped ease the transition at TJ, which Puev is thankful for.

A new coach means a new system and Puev is having lots of conversations with his players as they learn this new scheme. Only 8 starters return from the Missouri River Conference team. The Yellow Jackets qualified for playoffs in 2008 losing a sub-state game against Ottumwa.

Coach Puev is full of energy and is excited about his team. He knows they are young, especially up front on the offensive line where 1 senior, 2 juniors and 2 sophomores are starting.

He’s already got numbers headed in his direction from 53 last season to 85 this year 9-12. They field 3 teams.

Last year the team had to deal with some injuries that put some of this year’s team in the mix, including starting Quarterback Matt Wallace.

The offense is spread in name, but Puev is quick to point out that anyone can get the ball at any time and 4 plays look the same to keep the defense honest.

Puev is impressed with the leadership and willingness Wallace has in learning the new system. The junior made some strides in a passing league this summer that showed he’s allowed to be coached.

Coltan Harlan is like a boxer, last one down, first one up and has a willingness to be there and try to help others according to his coach.

Puev also adds that Tyler Gustovson spent most of the summer in the Phoenix area with grandparents and still participated in workouts. When he showed up for camp, he was the first one across the line each time.

Tyler Kuhl is the silent leader up front and is a captain. Ramsy Edenburg (6′, 240) is a freshman and coaches are quick to praise him as the real deal. He showed promise in a scrimmage against Puev’s old team, Benson. He plays next to Michael Walter who are a good combination.

Josh Skou is the brother to fellow starter, Caleb, and a captain. Harlan is another captain, having swagger, has bought into the system. Ricky Miller can play anywhere and Tony Pete is a transfer who came in not looking like a football player, but has quickly earned respect from coaches.

Pregame begins at 6p on AM 1150 KWKY in Des Moines. You can listen online as well at http://www.kwky.com and follow our in-game updates at http://www.twitter.com/KWKYSports

Dave Marcoulier is back as the color analyst, so is Brian Morris on the sidelines and Romelle Slaughter with the scoring updates. My name is Paul Yeager, we’ll see Friday night at 6 with a 730 kickoff from Council Bluffs Stadium.

Dear Brent

Dear Brent–

Missed you at the All-School Reunion this summer at Jesup Community Schools.

Amy and I brought the boys in and toured the school. I had not been in the new elementary and middle school since they were built. They knocked down the old elementary school and built the new one in its place. There’s also a new gym. They tell me the new gym is in some of the same spots as the old little gym. Remember playing in that place? What a firetrap.

Anyway, we went through the old part as well, which is still the high school. Noah wanted to see our old locker. I found the area outside of Mr. Hart‘s biology room. I can’t remember the exact number, but I guessed 13. I really made that one a mess for those years.

We then went up to the second floor and Noah even sat in one of those school desks. Hard to believe he will be in those desks soon. He’s getting big in a hurry. He does like the Cubs, so you’d like that. I think we were in Mr. Flaharty’s room. He had a Brett Favre poster up. Remember how he used to say watch out for this guy named Favre, he may be something some day….

The big gym is now the old gym and it was good to see. We saw Freddie Richards and his girlfriend in the halls. He was back with Mark Hamilton.

The all-school reunion was a little older than us. Not many guys from our time. In fact, John Bergman, class of 1995, was the youngest one in the room. I went with Dad and Julie. Dad kept saying over and over how much of a good time he had.

I sat with some of your family, including your Grandma Rose, Aunt Shelly and Aunt Vickie. I hadn’t seen them in more than 10 years. I guess the last time was at your funeral. Both of them had their husbands with them. Vickie’s husband Paul I had met awhile back. He was in radio in Cedar Rapids back then. Now they are both in Seattle working at Microsoft. It was good to see them and chat.

I sure missed seeing you. But then again, I miss you ever day. It is hard to believe it will be 14 years today August since you went on to a better place.

We miss you. But, we know you’re in a better place.

Your friend,

Paul

PS, The Cubs need your help, maybe they’ll promote Sandberg to be manager from AAA Iowa. He’s doing a pretty good job down here.

Brent was killed in a motor vehicle crash on August 25, 1996, or 14 years ago tonight. He’s survived by his parents Rod and LuAnn, brothers Grant and Kelley, and sister Amber (Chancey). I first wrote about Brent in this post about March Madness not being the same without him.

Our Iowa State Fair 2010

Another Iowa State Fair is in the books. The attendance did not top the 1 million mark, but it was close.

We also know many of you were watching our Iowa Public Television coverage of the Fair.

I remember as a kid watching the coverage, now I get to be a part of it. I truly enjoy going to the Fair as I’ve mentioned before.

My stories ranged from the Butter Cow to Wood chopping event at Pioneer Hall.

Here’s a rundown of my stories this year:

Before the Fair even started, we got a look inside the new Jacobson Exhibition Center. It is the new crown jewel of the fairgrounds. Fair General Manager Gary Slater gives John Torpy and myself a tour of the new building.

Noah inspects the Butter Cow.

John Torpy, Steve Carns and myself took a couple of stops inside the John Deere Agricultural building to see Sarah Pratt in action sculpting this year’s Butter Cow. We tried to show how the various times look different in the Ag building and how the cow looks in various stages. Let me know what you think. Did it work?

The Goodman family of Rose Hill was one of 6 Iowa farm families honored with the Way We Live Award. Rick Fuller, Josh Buettner and I visited the farm earlier this summer. A big thank you to their hospitality for the crew. Amber wrote the nomination letter about her family and she was right on about her father Mark, mother Linda and brother Daniel. Did I mention the kids were the cutest ever? Here’s the link to story. Also, thanks to Marlin Schram for the video of the ceremony when the Goodman’s were presented their plaque in the Knapp Animal Learning Center.

4-H project from Carroll County.

I was a 4-H member for the Shady Grove Super Stars. I was even a charter member of the group. One year, I refinished a chair that won a blue ribbon at the Iowa State Fair. So, this next assignment was fun. I got to do a feature on the 4-H building. I decided one of the stories not known about the building is the day all the exhibits come to the fair for judging and display. Here’s our look at the organized chaos as told to us by Mitchell Hoyer. I did run into an old Wartburg friend Andrea Flater while on the shoot with Rick Fuller. Also Eric Allen‘s mother in from Montezuma. John Torpy got some great pics of the fair ribbon dress. We also saw the dinosaur from Carroll County.

Wood chopping in the rain.

During the rain on Tuesday, Phil Blobaum and I were at the Pioneer Hall Wood Chopping event. Here’s the YouTube link if our IPTV site doesn’t load for you. The event did have a new element of danger with the water and the axes. Now, that’s entertainment.

I did do a little live blogging of this day that included a visit with my parents and all that rain. It also included a visit with Iowa Public Radio’s John Pemple. A link to the video interview is here.

Pie Eating.

The last event was the pie eating contest at the Bill Riley Stage. Lots of fun there for sure. Here’s the YouTube link. One of my favorite moments includes a girl from Indianola winning her round of the contest. Her reaction captured by John Torpy is great. Maybe we’ll see that in an open to the show next year.

Again, the video page with all the IPTV videos is here.

Paul Berge and Chris Gourley.

One fun story is the look behind the scenes at the production of the IPTV Fair program. Paul Berge and Chris Gourley did the work on this piece. They showed a lot of my co-workers who put in endless hours to bring the coverage into your homes, now in high-definition.

Westside night sees Dowling thump Valley 34-7

Dowling Crowd

Dowling Catholic fans start to assemble at Valley.

Friday nights in Iowa are special.
It is the beginning of the weekend, the night East Side Night happens at the Iowa State Fair and it’s also known as Football Night in Iowa.

Friday night was Westside Night at Valley Stadium where West Des Moines Dowling Catholic dropped arch-rival West Des Moines Valley 34-7.

Its the second straight win for Tom Wilson‘s Maroons over Gary Swenson‘s Tigers.

Nearly 10,000 stood around the stadium to see the debut of Connor Bravard and the high-octane offense full of receivers like Amara Darboh, Eric Lee and Jake Yacinich. Darboh made a grab before half on a hail-mary heave to the end zone to set the tone for the rest of the game. Yacinich blocked a punt in the first quarter that was more of an interception. He just flat-out caught the ball off the punter’s foot. Lots of special teams plays were clicking Friday night.

The defense had questions marks coming into the season with only 3 returning starters, but that unit quickly rose to the challenge and shut down the likes of Looney and Lewis. There also was a QB change for Valley as Jeff Pullen started, but Connor Blythe finished the game. Valley was shut out until 1:27 left in the game. Most of the Valley starters were still in, which you could justify because they were working with their likely new quarterback.

The fake punt with Dowling leading by 30 points did raise some eyebrows, we’ll see who remembers that one later. That is usually a set play where the punter looks for a certain check point in coverage, if it’s not there, he takes off running for the first down.

Dowling finished with 161 yards rushing, 84 yards passing. Valley tallied 83 yards rushing and 55 yards passing.

Tom Chapman, Paul Yeager and Brian Morris in the press box at Valley. (Romelle Slaughter photo)

Dowling travels to Council Bluffs on Friday to play Thomas Jefferson. We’ll be on the air at 6 with the pregame show. Hopefully we’ll have Dave Marcoulier back in the booth after a bout of illness on Friday. You know it was serious when Dave couldn’t go. A big thanks to Tom Champan for filling in as our color commentator. He was to be in the booth anyway as he won an auction last year to be a part of the broadcast team. He thought he’d be able to watch his son Mac kick from the back row of the press box, he instead got a front row view of the action. A bit thanks to him and our trusty sideline reporter Brian Morris. Also thanks to Romelle Slaughter for his work on the Twitter feed and keeping us up to do on scores.

There are some other sources of information if you’re interested. One view is from the No, Its Iowa website I referred to in Friday’s broadcast. A plug for Jesse Gavin‘s site is to check in this week as he goes to see the head coaching debut of Alex Pollock and the Aplington Parkersburg Falcons. Alex’s older brother Andy is a new varsity assistant on this year’s Maroon squad.

A preview story on CBTJ will post Thursday or Friday ahead of the game. You can listen to the game online at KWKY.com or on AM1150 KWKY Des Moines.

Week 0, Dowling @ Valley game preview, Aug. 20, 2010

Valley Stadium47 schools are vying to be the top team. Only one will finish on top. Will it be Dowling Catholic? They are searching for their first state title since 2001. Will it be Valley? They’ve won 4 titles (08, 05, 03, 02) since Dowling went back-to-back.

The Maroons start the season ranked first in the Des Moines Register and Iowa Sports Connection Polls. Coach Tom Wilson says he’s only talked about rankings twice about rankings to his players. This was one of those times. He says every year there’s a target on their back, this year, that target is the size of an aircraft carrier. Coach Wilson says this team is not as strong as last year’s that finished 12-1.

This is the first game for both teams, the earliest they’ve ever had a game.

Week 0 has 24 games as a result of scheduling imbalances caused by uneven numbers in Class 4A-West; some 4A teams picking up a non-conference game with a 3A opponent.

Dowling ended the season on November 13th, 2009 in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls with a semi-final loss to Marshalltown. A late pass from Chanse Creekmur gave the Maroons their only loss on 12 wins.

Valley finished on a down note in the first-round of the playoffs with a 48-0 loss to Urbandale to end the season at 6-5.

The last time these two teams met it was at Drake Stadium where the continuous clock was being used for a bit with a 44-14 win by Dowling Catholic as 11,000 jammed in to see that game.

A lot has changed for these two teams.
Gone are 32 seniors from Dowling including playmakers on defense.
Valley returns 10 starters, but must replace QB Taylor Nelson, who threw for 1,472 yards.

Gary Swenson enters his 35th season with a career record of 273-85. Swenson says junior QB Jeff Pullen established himself early as the team’s quarterback in a competition with senior Connor Blythe. The Tigers hope to mix the pass and run, but the running game is impressive. Martin Looney and Trey Lewis are good backs who along with Brandon Ellingson are all back for another year of varsity football. Ellingson, who coach Wilson calls impressive, and Lewis are juniors. So they may just be getting started.

The Valley is big again with tackle’s Bryan Campos (6-6, 244) and Trevor Hanson (6-6, 278). They don’t get any smaller in between, so look out.

The Defense is well coached by assistant Randy Ripperger. Wilson gave high praise to Coach Ripperger in the pre-game interview which you can hear at 7p during tonight’s broadcast.

Valley/Dowling September 4, 2009 at Drake Stadium.

Tom Wilson is in 18th season as a head coach with a 137-51 overall record.

We’ll get more in-depth with coach during the broadcast, but he’s anticipating a good game with a great team. His offense is filled with weapons. Let’s not forget this senior class doesn’t know much about losing. They’ve only lost once as a team in 3 years. That includes freshman, sophomore and now varsity.

Connor Bravard is the new QB. Dalton Parrott will get the chance to be the featured running back. The real weapons are at receiver. Eric Lee, 3-year starter Ben Boesen and a name you will know well by the end of the season, Amara Darboh. Look for the Maroons to think pass first, then run this season as they may be spreading things out a bit more.

The defense is the bigger question with only 3 returning defensive starters back. But Josip Juric was a starter on offense last year, so was Ty Flood at running back. Both move over to help shore up the defensive unit.

This is 59th meeting of these two schools since 1968, but for the first time in August.

Many times this game opened up the season, but not this early. Neither school is in session yet.

Also the done by the Iowa High School Athletic Association this off-season comes in the playoffs when it comes to the sub-state designation. The sub-state term is gone and now all teams qualifying – 32 in each Class – are play-off qualifiers. The sub-state was proposed for the 2008 and 2009 season by the Football Coaches Association and the Playoff Committee.

Next week: Dowling @ Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.
Valley home with Ottumwa.

We’ll be on the air at 6p from Council Bluffs. Also check our twitter feed @KWKYSports. Dave Marcoulier, Bryan Morris and Romelle Slaughter for tonight’s game. We’ll do our best to fill-in for Mark Amadeo the next two years.

The games will be live streamed on our website at http://www.KWKY.com. Just look for the live streaming game.

Tuesday at the Fair

There’s only one Tuesday at the Iowa State Fair. I’m headed out for a shoot this afternoon.

This will be my attempt to chronicle the day.

1010a departing in our shuttle van in the rain.

Clyde is driving us in the rain.
My passenger is the star of IPTV, Mr. Dan Wardell. His story times are 11, 1 and 3 in the Varied Industries building.

1040a at the IPTV booth. Of course Dan ran into my mother already. Joellen is almost a super fan of Dan’s.

1102a I did convince my parents to eat early. Actually it was my mom who said she was hungry. Good thing we had our umbrellas as the line was long to get into the cattlemen’s barn.

1230p time to actually work. I’m covering the wood chopping event at Pioneer Hall. The rain is forcing the event inside.

138p wood chopping is underway outside in the elements. Nice crowd in the rain.

227p All done with our shoot. Phil and I are soaked. My feet haven’t been this wet since I sweat thru my socks on opening day Thursday.

Phil and I ran into Mr Fair Mark Pearson.

317p Ran into John Pemble of Iowa Public Radio. He was out doing stories for IPR and JohnPemble.com. We did an interview and even got a picture to mark the occasion.
